A New Way to Study Organoid Function

During the session, our CTO, Dr. Fan Wu, introduced SomaFocus and shared how the technology is enabling new approaches to measuring neural activity in intact 3D cultures.
A key focus of the presentation was our novel automated depth recording capability, designed to capture electrophysiological activity from within intact brain organoids. This approach aims to address a major limitation in the field—accessing functional activity beyond surface-level regions.
Dr. Wu also walked through real data from early adopters, highlighting how researchers are using SomaFocus to measure functional activity across different organoid models and experimental conditions. These case studies demonstrated the potential for more consistent, detailed insight into neural behavior without complex sample preparation.
Modeling Neural Dysfunction in Tourette Syndrome

Dr. Vaccarino's lab has been at the forefront of using patient-derived brain organoids to study neurodevelopmental disorders. In this webinar, Dr. Vaccarino and her postdoctoral researcher, Dr. Rauthan, shared real electrophysiological data from Tourette syndrome organoid models and discussed how functional measurements can uncover disease-relevant phenotypes that may not be apparent through morphology alone.
